Anyhow, I want to thank everyone for all the sweet recommendations for Sci-Fi shows to watch! I’ve already seen the first two episodes of Falling Skies, and when I make it through the rest of the series I’m totally gonna review it. I’m also checking out a few other series that caught my interest that you all name-dropped, so I’ll keep you updated with that.
On that note, though, I thought it might be fun to cruise netflix and watch random sci-fi movies that I may not have seen or heard of before, and review them every Friday ir every second Friday or something. So:
This week’s movie is Predators. Here’s the description from Netflix:
Rugged mercenary Royce (Adrien Brody) inherits command of an elite team of human fighters — including dorky-but-dangerous Edwin (Topher Grace) and tough-but-beautiful Isabelle (Alice Braga) — as they are hunted by a race of ruthless alien trackers known as Predators. Director Nimród Antal’s sci-fi action explosion, which also stars Laurence Fishburne and an uzi-toting Danny Trejo, is a direct sequel to the 1987 blockbuster Predator.

Initial Thoughts: I vaguely remember watching the original with Aaaahnold in it many years ago. I may have been either drinking or extremely sleep deprived when I saw it, because I don’t remember much, but what I do remember is explosions and enough cheese to clog the arteries of the healthiest movie fan. I picked this, at random, from Canadian Netflix (which has way less options than American Netflix), and am generally expecting more of the same–explosions and cheese.
Of course, there appear to be a few variations (though not necessarily improvements) on the old formula, the two biggest being Laurence Fishburne (who, despite having been in many action movies that I have seen, still doesn’t strike me as an action movie character) and also, a token badass girl character. If there’s no real plot to speak of, I won’t be surprised, but I won’t necessarily be upset, either–I actually kind of like mindless action stuff because I can work while watching it and not miss very much.
Notes I made while watching it:
- everyone miraculously speaks English, despite their varying ethnicities and locations they were presumably kidnapped from.
- except maybe the Japanese yakuza guy. He hasn’t said anything at all since the movie started.
- The black guy did not die first, but a minority (the guy from a Mexican drug cartel) did.
- Topher Grace? What?
- Almost halfway in, still no Laurence Fishburn. Not sure if that’s good or bad.
- If badass sniper-lady falls for random main character guy, I just don’t even know. I’m already a bit peeved that they’re portraying her as having a big, helpful heart despite the fact that she assassinates people for a living.
- The Japanese guy does speak English! Topher Grace is just as confused and surprised as I am!
- Laurence Fishburne showed up, was on screen for about ten minutes before it is revealed that he is crazy. He then explodes. Okay.
- Girl-face says they were chosen because they are earth’s predators and monsters. It is still unclear as to why they are hunting Topher Grace–is the doctor he’s playing secretly a serial killer or something?
- Why can the predators see footpritns with infrared? Can this actually be done? Must google.
- Haha, what. Yakuza character finds a katana, keeps it with him, and duels predator to the death with it. He is using katana kind of like a broadsword. Both of them die.
